Joseph Atkinson (James, Joshua) was born May 20, 1790 in Batley Township, West Riding, Yorkshire, England.  He married Sarah Ward on October 7, 1810 at St. Peter’s in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.  Sarah Ward was born about 1791 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England.
In 1820, Joseph and his wife Sarah, and their four children, Samuel, Ann, Frank and Ellen boarded a ship called “Hamlet” at Liverpool, England and sailed for Canada but they landed at the New York Port on August 16, 1820.  According to a family story from Earl Calverley, the ship was sailing for Canada but was blown off course and they landed in New York City.  The reason for the family to leave England is unknown, but the time frame shows he left after the “War of 1812”.  We do know that land was opening up to be settled in Ontario, Canada.

Joseph and his family stayed in New York City for three years and they had two more children, Ruth Livinia and Francis James.  It is unknown if he worked as a tailor while they stayed in New York but, the ship record did state that his occupation was a tailor by trade.
The family moved to Esquesing, Halton County, Ontario, Canada and a 1-½ story home was built at Concession 9, West ½ lot 2.

On December 25, 1837, Joseph and Sarah had their children, Lavina, James, Thomas, Joseph, Sarah baptized at St Stephen’s Church in Hornby, Halton County, Ontario, Canada.  Mary Ann was baptized there on December 25, 1846.

Joseph, age 82, died on May 18, 1872 and Sarah, age 85, died on May 2, 1876 in Esquesing, Halton County, Ontario, Canada, Canada.  They are both buried at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Cemetery in Trafalgar Township, Halton County, Ontario, Canada.

I have used the date of February 22, 1837 for the marriage of Ellen Atkinson & Thomas Calverley. The explanation follows:
The date February 22, 1837 is the date Marriage Bond was issued.

The ink writing on the microfilm was so faded that it could not be read.
The information from the library information is copied below.

I have looked at the microfilm for this record and the filmed was so overexposed that it cannot be read. The date 1837-02-22 is the date the bond was issued. The marriage date would be a few days after this date. This is the closest that we have been able to determine the actual date of the marriage of Thomas Calverley & Ellen Atkinson. (her first name is misspelled)
